From Nights People

Spend your night in the quirky Backpackers Cottage. This former shearers’ quarter is the perfect spot for every traveler on a budget. It sleeps up to six people and has been painted and decorated tastefully with a vintage shabby chic feel. Heat up your own fireplace and kick back and relax in the comfy sofa or arm chair.
A massive wooden dinner table offers enough space for you and your mates. You can cook your dinner in the fully equipped kitchen that comes with electrical stove and oven, microwave, fridge and freezer.

Enjoy pastoral New Zealand and fill your lungs with crisp mountain air. Several private walking tracks and bush walks will take you along breathtaking vistas.

If hiking is not your thing, how about relaxing in the lush gardens of Haurata? Hundreds of rhododendron trees, an avenue of cheery trees and heaps of other plants and flowers allow for a relaxed atmosphere and some time off from the road.

Other activities include mountain-biking, bushwalks and swimming.

Makaraka is a small place just before you get into Gisborne (south side of Gisborne).
Follow the SH2 sign towards Opotiki (or Gisborne if coming from the other direction)

The bottom of the Makaretu is 47 km from Makaraka. Just before you get to the bottom of our road there is a uphill bridge.
Once on the Makaretu rd you drive for approx. 6 km to a fork, keep right.

658 Aerial is where we live and you are ½ way. After going over the 2nd bridge you are only one corner from the Haurata drive way.

There is an alternative driveway 400 m up the road for those who have front wheel drive cars, vans, a bus or who don't feel comfortable tackling the steep gravel driveway.

Please keep well over to the left going around blind corners as lots of people use the Makaretu Rd.
